General Infoe-Kata is a startup project in the academia neighbourhood of Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor, Malaysia. Started its development work in August of 2008, e-Kata is receiving encouraging number of visitors and being subscribed by learners of Bahasa Malaysia and visited by more than 2000 unique visitors in its first week of launch. e-Kata aims to be the chosen Bahasa Malaysia language-learning tool that combines fun self-study lessons, motivational tools and supportive fellow learners or moderator to help you learn the language. e-Kata combines the strength of multimedia elements and bringing the online collaboration and authentic learning experience to learners. We can safely claim that we are the first online multimedia learning tool to learn the Malay language for novice learners. What we offere-Kata offers both free contents and paid courses (subscription). Our free contents include informative articles on Bahasa Malaysia, web resources and links to selected materials. It also brings to your attention the news updates on the Bahasa Malaysia language that are happening around us. For a systematic learning with complete multimedia elements and features to enhance your learning, we advise you to subscribe to the course. Tourists may use the module speciallly tailored for travelling purposes. For students studying Bahasa Malaysia subjects, we have a full curriculum relevant to your needs which focus on grammar, listening and conversational skills. Why "e-Kata"Kata is basically WORD in Bahasa Malaysia. Word is the basis of any sentence or conversation How it startedWe just wanted to promote the language to people who never knew it exists. There is also a need to fill the vacuum in the availability of online course for Bahasa Malaysia designed by professional instructional designers and verified by subject matter experts. e-Kata's initial development was funded by MOSTI ( Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation). Although the initial idea seemed to be more about patriotisme, we need to make it sustainable as a business. We will have to charge for subscription for access to the course. It was launched publicly in August of 2009 although it was beta tested three months prior to the launch. As of right now, we are definitely, like most other new innovative services, be spending more than we are earning. And we are keeping the subscription fees low to make it affordable and attractive. Our platformOur team works mostly with Open Source Software. We basically leverage on previously developed work and used mostly available technology which we revamped according to our requirements as in hacking some of the scripts. We used these platform because we need to concentrate on creating the curriculum, produce compelling courses' contents and ensuring the quality of the contents to be both relevant and accurate rather than reinventing the system from scratch.
